A few weeks ago the kids came down with a bug. It hit Evie first, and I just assumed new teeth were coming with a vengeance. But when it hit Finn, I knew it wasn’t good.
Can’t you just feel her pain? Augh! She was HATING life!
Finn wasn’t much more charming. I can’t tell you the last time he napped at 9a (18 months old maybe?), let alone in my arms, but here we were.
We are incredibly lucky that our kids are rarely sick. A stuffy nose here and there or a low grade fever, but nothing like I remember from childhood. Is it just me or do you remember puking all the time?
I remember napping on my grandparents shaggy blue carpet when my mom couldn’t be home. I remember the smell of her car when she came to pick me up. I remember cool baths and rags on my forehead. And (sorry, Dad), but I remember being 100% dependent on my mom. Moms are just better caretakers, right?
The night it hit Finn he was up half the night whimpering, crying, being hot. I snuggled into his bed and up to that hot, snotty, little germ breath. He was a mess and all he wanted was his mama. Evie was the same the night prior.
Both kids had terribly runny noses (we’re talkin’ lots-o-snot), were lethargic and clingy, and had fevers around 101.
Because our kids are rarely sick, we felt there was no time like the present to forego any traditional medicine and allow their bodies to heal naturally. So what did we do? Here’s the skinny:
- Essential Oils (to support the body)
- Applied cool washcloths to their face, neck and back for comfort (they both hated this)
- Had the kids adjusted by our chiropractor
- Gave the kids 2 Congaplex Chewables twice a day
- Allowed them to sleep/rest as much as possible
- Kept them hydrated
Before I break down each of these steps, let me tell you what happened. Evie’s fever was on and off for about 36 hours, but steadily decreased. After I put the oils on her chest and behind her ears, within 5 minutes she wanted out of my arms to wander around. She started playing, laughing and just being EVIE. Justin kept saying, “this is creeping me out a bit. She’s like a different baby!” Her fever did fluctuate over that time, just as it would have with Tylenol. After a solid night sleep, she was consistently her old self, minus a little extra snot.
We visit our chiropractor, Dr. Tyler at True Life Wellness, once a week as a family. Our appointment that Friday was for 8:15a. When Finn was still sleeping by 7:45 (always up by 7), I knew we would miss our appointment. I wasn’t willing to wake him after the night he’d had. Thankfully we were able to change our appointment to 10:45a. After Finn’s nap in my arms and Evie’s regular morning nap in her crib, we were off. Finn and Dr. Tyler are buddies, so Finn was happy to have Dr. Tyler help. Dr. Tyler instantly found the spot that needed adjusting. By the time we left the office, Finn was clearly feeling better. By noon, he was laughing and joking and in a great enough mood to send this message to Tyler:
This video is 3 hours after the picture above and 1 hour after being adjusted. Needless to say, we believe in chiropractic care!
We also gave the kids Congaplex Chewables, and took the capsule version ourselves to help guard us from any sneeze or cough flung in our direction. Congaplex provides support of the immune system and is a great supplement when you travel or feel like you’re coming down with a bug. We purchase our Standard Process supplements through Dr. Tyler. Find a local contact in your area who sell Standard Process here.
Both kids were very quickly back to their old shenanigans and feeling great!
