Okay, so I got a wi-tttttle off track this month with following through on my grocery tracking. Did you notice? 🙁 My last tracking update was weeks ago – augh. So sorry!
I did follow through on my Whole Foods tracking, but due to my mom being in town and Thanksgiving week, I never had the chance to post. So this week, my final week, I did a combo run. I’ll explain later.
Know this, week 3 of Whole Foods made me gasp. The total was $156 and change. I called Justin and said, “I love Whole Foods, like I loooooove Whole Foods, I want to cry with joy when I walk in, but we can’t afford it weekly. We just can’t.” For $156, I didn’t leave the store with turkey laced in gold either, just produce and odds and ends. Our issue (in a good way) is that most of our grocery list is produce, and I buy organic when available. So when Whole Foods charges $1.99/pound (right, not per head) for organic celery, our bill starts to scream. I’ve also been making Evie food to freeze which has increased our produce bill just enough to sting.
All that to say, I’ll debrief my take-aways from Hy-Vee, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods in future weeks. Each of them have some great qualities and products. For now, take in the final grocery tracking overview with a trip to both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods last night. Please excuse the lack of commentary… my time is limited today.
Trader Joe’s fresh produce.
Trader Joe’s odds and ends. These frozen mangos are amazing for smoothies. Put them slightly thawed on “sticks” (toothpicks) and Finn thinks they are the most fantastic addition to breakfast. Win Win!
A few weeks ago I accidentally bought peanut butter instead of almond butter. That is the return at the bottom of the receipt. Unfortunately, and oddly, TJ’s was out of their almond butter with sea salt last night. This is Finn’s “Super Butter” and we could not go another week sans Super Butter.
You have no idea the begging for Super Butter that has taken place over the last week, so off to Whole Foods I went.
One thing about Whole Foods… their bacon is divine. Seriously. Divine. And we love bacon at our house.
Also, I wanted big leafy kale for Luann’s Kale Salad this week and no one does big leafy kale like WF. BTW – my sister-in-law made Luann’s Kale Salad for Thanksgiving dinner and – no joke – I have thought about this salad at least twice a day for a week. Is this a problem?
I will break each store down … the good, bad and ugly … over the next few weeks. I’ll include what I discovered I liked and didn’t like, as well as the best “bargains” locally for staple health items.
Thanks for taking this journey with me. It’s been so amazing to really price and product compare in this way. I hope it was helpful to you, as well!
