I slammed through my shopping Tuesday evening to get home for the presidential debate. Perhaps Tuesday night isn’t the best night to shop at TJ’s? Unlike the last 3 weeks when I’ve been overwhelmingly impressed with TJ’s, I just wasn’t this week. There were five, yes FIVE, items on my list that I couldn’t get this week. Watercress and raw beets for juicing, fresh sage, chilled lemon juice, and bananas. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. TJ’s is synonymous with 19 cent bananas, right? They were fresh out. Bummer trip. Actually double bummer as this means I’ll need to make a second trip elsewhere this week. Aargh.
Do you ever feel like your shopping list is the same from week to week? The leeks here are new. I hear about them often and have never cooked with them. Not sure what I’ll add them to yet. Suggestions welcome! Everything is organic with the exception of the celery hearts, lemon, avocado and onion as there was not an organic option for those items. I’m OK with all of those being conventional, except the celery. I’m only slightly cringing on that one.
Justin’s “surprise” this shopping trip was the beef jerky. I’m not a fan, so this is all his! And the reader recommendation on the tortilla chips has me buying them AGAIN this week. Seriously, these are PHENOMENAL! (Thanks, Laura!)
Note the TJ’s 99 cent candy item. Waiting at the check out line, I saw this box of “candy covered licorice.” Back in my sugar-addict-hay-days, I considered Good and Plenty candy as a great movie treat. NOw before you get all judgy-judgy on me, I am well aware that I am part of the 1% of the 1% who actually like this candy. While you gag, I drool. These were the TJ version, but they were old… and chewy… and not in a good way. Major disappointment.
Our menu this week is a little more adventurous than the usual. I normally just try 1 or 2 new recipes each week and GOD HELP ME, this week I’m trying four. No, I’m not pregnant and nothing strange is in our water. Just went slightly crazy while planning for the week. Wish me luck!
