The goal of this blog is to share our journey in eating healthy and living well. We work around food allergies and find alternatives for “conventional” ingredients. We try to simplify life, although for awhile it seemed more complex due to the nature of food production in our country. There have been a variety of studies, articles, documentaries and case studies that have reassured me we are make the right choices for our family. But I also think it’s important to understand why we are dealing with such an increase in food allergies.
I’ve shared our Food Philosophy and our Baby Steps to Better Eating, but few things confirm the reason we eat to fuel our bodies more than a recent French study looking at how GMOs (genetically modified organisms) impact our bodies and our health.
The study, released Sept. 19, 2012, is the Mother of all reasons to avoid GMOs. The study shows that genetically modified foods fed to both laboratory and farm animals can be toxic and/or allergenic. The study was conducted to identify possible long-term health effects related to GM corn. The findings of this study are in line with multiple other animal studies showing gross health complications due to consumed GM products.
Below are a few “highlights” from the study findings:
- The rats fed Monsanto’s GM products developed massive breast tumors, kidney damage, and liver damage.
- Female rats consuming the GM corn died 2-3 times more than the control group and died more quickly.
- Male rats consuming the GM corn developed tumors up to 1-1/2 years sooner than the control group.
- GM feed caused obesity and significant changes to the digestive system and major organs.
Further findings can be found in this summary document.
GM foods are not labeled in America. California is fighting for food to be labeled (note: not banned, just labeled). If Proposition 37 passes, we will be taking the first step in cleaning up our food system. Of course, major food companies, including some organic companies, are pooling millions of dollars to ensure Californians (and eventually all Americans) remain clueless about the science experiment they are part of.
At least 40 other nations label GM products – why not America?
Looking at developed countries, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Russia, China and 15 nations across Europe label GM foods – why not America?
The FDA “determined” 20-some years ago that GM foods were “substantially equivalent” to conventionally produced foods. Today we are stuck with poor policy thanks to under the table deals and the money behind the lobby.
Roughly 93% of all soy, 86% of all corn, and 93% of all canola seeds are genetically modified. It’s everywhere.
Just think: if the food we are eating is doing this to rats…
… what do you suspect it is doing to you? Your parents? Your spouse? Our children?
I encourage you to do your own research and make small changes over time that will keep these toxins out of your – and your kids – bodies.
I say with full confidence: these products are part of the reason why Americans are overweight, obese, allergy-prone, sick and dying.
Our children deserve better. Be part of the change.
