There is something magical about this place.
I’m not sure if it’s the open land, the wonderful people who own/run it, or the heart behind what is happening here, but Wills Family Orchard is one of our most favorite places in Iowa. I was pregnant with Evie on our first visit in 2011 and we introduced her last year.
This year the family opened the orchard up for pick-your-own, which we’ve been dying to do for quite sometime. Finn could not wait to get his hands on these babies…
… and oh man, they did not disappoint! Plus, I think things always just taste better when you have a hand – literally – in the process.
Finn was so excited to dig in! By the time we’d left he’d already devoured three apples and continued to ask for “the ones I picked” for days! 🙂
After our 10 pound bag was filled, we had to make a stop at the chicken coup. Finn told his friends all about the apples he’d found and Evie kept waving, convinced they were cluck-cluck-clucking just for her. (They were, I’m sure. She’s got a way, that one!)
We are so excited to head back to Wills for pumpkins this fall. Truly, if you are within driving distance to the farm, this needs to be added to your must-visit list!
In addition to the mountain of yummy apples we purchased, we were so excited Wills was stocked with honey. It’s a great consistency. Sheer perfection! The man in front of me was buying some raw honey still in the beeswax. I was so curious about this I started chatting him up. He convinced me to try it, and I’m so glad he did. The taste is incredibly sweet, but Finn (heck we all did, minus Ev) loved taking off a piece and chewing it down the beeswax for a snack. I’d never experienced honey in it’s original beeswax state, but it was so fantastic!
Stop back tomorrow to see a super sweet treat we made with all these apples. It’s a new take on a classic that both my Grandma’s had in their recipe box. And with fall just around the corner, you’re going to crave this!
Have you picked apples before? Another fruit? Tell me where!
