Are there smells that just make you happy? For me it’s fresh cut grass, cookies in the oven, sandy beaches, and the natural soap aisle at health food stores.
At our first visit to the Downtown Farmer’s Market this year, I picked up a bar of Calendula soap from a vendor. I fell in love. So much in love I nearly cried when this amazing bar of soap I’d purchased was near gone. I immediately looked online to find out if Pickle Creek Herbal would be at the Market again that week and if they’d have my soap in stock. (And then kindly asked if they’d like to host a giveaway so you could experience all this goodness!)
Pickle Creek Herbal is an organic herb farm run by Tim and Jocelyn Engman in Brighton, Iowa. They plant, grow and nurture their own herbs, which they then use to create amazing herbal infusion and extractions by combining timeless wisdom with years of personal experience. Another fact I love about the Engman’s is that they are the fourth generation working the soil on the 80-acre farm. Jocelyn told me they feel privileged to be able to guide this process from seed to store. Their mission is to show the world how amazing herbs can be when they are done right, and believe me – they are doing it right!
Pickle Creek Herbal is at the Downtown Des Moines Market every second and fourth Saturday through October which means you have one last chance to catch them this year! They will be there THIS Saturday, October 26. If you are a member of the Iowa Food Co-Op, Pickle Creek soaps are available for purchase. And if you’re not local or you’ll miss them this weekend, their products are now also available for purchase on their website.
Lavender has the incredible ability to soothe your skin and your soul with it’s therapeutic power. The Rosemary Mint products help wake up your senses while rejuvenating your skin. The Engman’s grow their herbs organically on their small Iowa farm before harvesting them at their peak and infusing them in small batches to create these amazing hand-crafted natural herbal products. Just opening the box these products were in felt like heaven!
The Lavender Rosemary Soap is vegan and hypoallergenic handmade lye soap. This is great for all skin types, but especially great for sensitive skin.
The salves are also incredible! The Lavender Skin-Soothing Salve is a great natural product for rashes of all types, including (are you listening moms?!) DIAPER RASH! We’ve been rash-free for awhile in our house, but I’m excited to share this find with friends who have new babies!
The Gardener’s Salve is great for people who love being outdoors. Use this salve on rashes, bruises, scrapes, minor cuts, poison ivy, insect bites and dry chapped skin. Last week the kids and I were outside and I came in with 12, yes TWELVE, bites from those little black biting gnats! I used this salve and felt such relief! The chamomile and calendula soothe the skin while the comfrey root promotes natural healing.
The Lavender Lip Balm and the Rosemary Lip Balm are great staples as they include calendula (which helps heal chapped lips) and lemon balm (which combats cold sores). Finn has had terribly chapped lips lately, so we’ve been using the Rosemary Lip Balm which is the only balm he’s let us use! WIN!
The Rosemary Mint Soap is also vegan and hypoallergenic handmade lye soap that is great for refreshing your skin. The added mint is great for helping you wake up, too 🙂
