I made the tragic mistake of mentioning something about seeing his “favorite friends on the big stage,” so he’s been standing by the window…

So much money spent on toys, games and activities. But why buy toys, when you can use your imagination?!?

Pretending Evie’s hamper (formally Finn’s and formally mine from childhood) is Oscar’s can. Oh, and that blue-eyed boy will only respond if he’s called “Oscar.”

This is a helmet. Duh.

As he watches me draw, he gives me the thumbs-up. (Don’t mind the wild fashion sense. This is Finn’s creation!)

Not sure where this came from, but Justin refers to him as Johnny Appleseed when he wears his “pot.” Only makes for a wee bit of panic when Finn asks, “where’s my pot, Mommy?”

Uncle Chris’ future racketball doubles partner. In the meantime, a severe safety hazard in the house, particularly around Evie.

See the boxes of new shoes by the wall? He refuses to try them on, but he’ll own the box they were sent in and “draw you, Mommy!”

Of all the fancy things in the world, you quickly realize kids don’t need millions of new toys or wild gadgets. Believe me, we have plenty. They need the freedom to be creative and explore. And boy, does this little dude do that!

Justin and I are often referred to as objects or animals. In our house, Finn is the spoon, I’m the fork and Daddy is the knife. Finn is the turtle, I’m the giraffe and Daddy is the lion. And don’t think about reverting back to your “real” self before Finn is ready! Whoa.

I love the creativity and exploration! Reminds me to dream a little myself!

What will he come up with next?

The school district I grew up in found themselves in hot water recently. Five special education staff at one elementary school - two teachers and three paras – were suddenly no longer employed by the district. This made for quite the story, but there were no answers. The district couldn’t comment due to privacy issues and the staff weren’t speaking. Can you image what went through the minds of the parents who have children in these rooms? ‘What had happened to remove these staff and was my child harmed?’ The only comment from the district was that the school had the students best interests at heart. Not comforting.

I learned from several friends the true reason for the staff firings and kept watching Omaha news sources for the story to break. Finally, six days later, the story was out. Six days!

During a lesson in sandwich-making for special education students, staff knowingly exposed a peanut-allergic, non-verbal student to peanut butter. The staff knew the child was allergic and proceeded to give him the peanut butter. This poor child couldn’t indicate his allergy because of his non-verbal disorder, making this act even more offensive. As most peanut-allergic children would, he went into anaphylactic shock and 911 was called. What is worse? The staff went on to cover up what they had done by removing the peanut butter from the classroom and telling officials they weren’t sure why the child went into shock.

Having a peanut-allergic son, I’m simultaneously livid and saddened by this event. Parents trust school staff to care for their children. Certainly, I can understand if one staff member forgets a child has an allergy, but I have a hard time believing five staff would forgot. What makes this situation inexcusable is the cover-up that took place. In fact, this put the child at even greater risk because medics may not have been able to treat the child effectively.

Allergies, particularly peanut allergies, can be deadly. An allergy isn’t a sensitivity. It isn’t a nuisance. It isn’t something to take lightly or to ignore.

My hope is this situation would provide an opportunity for all Millard staff to be educated about food allergies: what to do, what not to do, how to handle a reaction.

My fear is this will be swept under the rug and not discussed again.

And if that’s the case, an even greater injustice has occurred.

This past week was a week of “treats.” I love those kind of surprise weeks.

Happy (day after) Mother’s Day to all! I was able to celebrate with my 2 favorite kiddos, my amazing husband, my fantastic mom, my hard-working dad, my loving Grandma, and a slew of incredible aunts, uncles, cousins, cousins children and neighbors. We had a fantastic day! It’s a rare treat to all be together, so I soak it in when I can. We were even able to Skype with my birthday brother the day before, so the gang felt all there!

My husband and kids gifted me with my favorite treat – CUPPY CAKES! Cupcakes from Jones Bros in Omaha, winner of Food Networks “Cupcake Wars?” Um, yes, please!

Before I knew I would be bestowed such greatness, Justin and I went out for some post-kiddo-bedtime dessert Saturday. Wheatfields was the winner. Holy smokes! Omaha has amazing sweets! If you haven’t been, it’s a must-go! I brought home a little treat for my mom – a mini banana chocolate cream pie. Heaven.

A new report released last week projects that 43% of Americans could be obese by 2030. I blame this on a lot of things: laziness, high fructose corn syrup, fast food, 64 ounce pops, copious amounts of sweet treats (see last 2 bullets), etc. When I think of what it looks like in the grocery store, I picture this. Are you kidding me? I love oreos as much as the next guy, but that’s just fatty fatter-tons. A triple-double? Stupid.

I’ve committed to getting back in the groove of working out this week. Here’s to never seeing these bonus 12 baby pounds again. Treat binge is over.

My mom and I attended a retirement dinner hosted by her school district last week. What a fun night to honor her years of service… even if she hates standing in front of a crowd! WOO HOO!!!

At the party I re-connected with an old friend and another old friends parents. A true treat.

When Justin and I were out this weekend, we met a girl who now attends my beloved high school. She was THREE when I graduated. THREE. Damn.

Speaking of feeling crazy old, two of my favorite neighbors who I also got to babysit had babies in the last few months. They are both amazing moms. It’s a treat to see them all grown!

My favorite moment from the weekend? Two chubby toddler arms squeezing my neck at last nights bedtime with a sloppy wet kiss and those precious four words: “I wuv you, Mommy! Sweetest treat there is!

Favorite moment from the weekend? Let’s hear it!

My Grandma has a great tradition of giving each of her great-grandchildren a nice piggy bank. To date, that’s seven piggy banks! On birthdays or other special occasions, the kids receive cards filled with coins for their banks.

My Grandma is in her 80s and, as most in that generation, is a saver and incredibly mindful of how her dollars (and cents) are spent. I think what I appreciate most about her care of money is the simplicity, although we all laugh when she drives 5 miles out of her way for 1 cent less per gallon fuel!

In addition to the coins Finn receives from his Great-Grandma, we’ve started giving Finn change for his piggy bank to help teach him about money and saving. Sometimes it’s a random surprise and sometimes it’s a reward for kindness or great behavior. Although I know he doesn’t yet fully understand what the coins are or where they go, he LOVES putting change in his bank. His eyes light up when we share a handful of coins, instantly bolting for the stairs saying, “for my penny bank!”

We talk about money while he counts the coins and one-by-one adds them to the bank. We talk about saving and we talk about giving. I’m sure one day it will all click, but in the meantime, I’m enjoying him love the sound of the “penny bank” CLANK!

How do you teach your kids about money?

Whoever invented the Boppy is amazing; however, why are neither the covers nor the pillows waterproof? Certainly there’s a way to do “waterproof” without making it feel like a rain coat, right?

I miss kickboxing something fierce. This weekend I set up my workout goals from May through December. No one meets a goal unless it’s set, right? It’s time to hit the ground running. Looking forward to ninja kicking something soon… and fitting back into my smaller pants.

I packed up several tubs of maternity clothes this weekend. So bittersweet. Some of those clothes are darn cute and comfy! Don’t tell, but a few lingering items might stay in my closet long-term. No one will know, right? It’s our secret.

While Evie cried on the drive to some friends Saturday, Finn innocently asked, “when she gonna stop crying, Mommy?” Is “18″ honest enough for a 2 year old?

When Evie was first born, she was going down for a nap when Finn was waking up and visa versa. Selfishly, this just didn’t work for me. Further, Finn was hardly napping at 1p. Instead he was reading books, rolling around, singing songs, shouting “MOMMY!” We moved Finn’s nap back to 1:30 and voila! Joint napping! Dream.come.true.

Evie rocked some BabyLegs this weekend. Why are these not appropriate for adults?

Ordered a family picture on canvas from EasyCanvasPrints last week. After a few online deals, the canvas was far cheaper than the competing sites. Sure hope it was worth the risk!

Setting up Finn and my activity calendar for the summer. Ev will tag along and eat or sleep. I’m hearing about lots of great low-cost (or free) kid-friendly events and activities in the area. I’ll compile the list of options and share soon.

Know of any great toddler events in Des Moines or Omaha? Please let me know!

Reminiscent of another classic Finnegan Fit, here is the latest. I couldn’t help but laugh when the hands went straight to the eyes and rubbed.

After rolling off the end of the bed twice at night, we’ve put a body pillow at the end of Finn’s big boy bed. As a result, he thinks he can sleep on either end, and usually does, often times with his booty high in the sky. Sleeping kids are hilarious!

I admit, I’m a GLEEK! The Whitney Houston episode last week was amazing. I get sad thinking they might really graduate. Rumor is Rachel and Finn are dating in “real life,” too. I can’t tell you the amount of joy this gives me.

Sesame Street LIVE is coming to town again. You better believe we’ll be there!

In addition to a few local joints, our quick “go-to” meal has always been Panera or Chick-fil-a. After reading two posts about what is really in Panera and Chick-fil-a, I’m bummed. I’ll warn you, if you always thought these were the “healthy” options and don’t want your world rocked, don’t read the posts. Very disappointing.

I’m in search of new toddler Keen’s on sale. Is that a dream? Finn LIVED in his borrowed pair last summer. I might just suck it up and buy them at {GASP} full-price, which goes against every frugal and ethical bone in my body.

I forgot how much laundry you go do when you have a baby, and a spitty baby, at that.

Justin and I have loved The Office for years; however, since Steve Carrell stepped away, there has been an increase in raunchy, gross-humor. I’m just not a fan.

I made the mistake of taking both kiddos with me grocery shopping last week. Evie, who should have been napping, decided to fuss and scream until I picked her up. Finn recently found the “mini” carts and must push one. This is usually OK (minus a few display crashes and heel rams) until we get to the produce aisle where my curious son likes to touch and sample ev.er.y. item. Yes, I’m THAT mom and my son is THAT kid. I used to glare and judge. Now I get it. Payback. Thankfully I found a friend at the store who helped distract Finn while I ran through the section like Super Woman on Supermarket Sweep to fulfill our weekly needs. Never again.

Having your own kids helps you appreciate and understand your own parents so much better. Now all those “NO’s!” make sense.

Finn and I start a 5-week activity and tumbling class at the YMCA this week. Evie will be with us, hopefully sleeping in her carseat. (Who is laughing?) Lord, help me!

Any other parents have some “judgey” moments pre-kids only to discover it’s just the way it is post-kids? Happy Monday!
